"So what's a Jelly?" I hear you cry
A Jelly is an inspired concept that has recently hit the UK from over the water (New York to be exact) and reached me via the fabulous author and homeworking expert, my friend Judy Heminsley.
Two rather geeky New York freelancers were working in at home one day contemplating not only navels but the drawbacks of working from home in isolation:
"Wouldn’t it be a great idea", they mused, "to get a group of home workers together in one place where they could have free wi-fi access for work, access to refreshments and plenty of creative people to share gossip, knowledge and experience with." So that’s what they did in their apartment – oh, and called it Jelly because they were eating jelly beans when they were struck by inspiration.
More information about Jelly can be found on Judy's great site from whence I pinched the above description (thanks Judy :))
Jelly's are springing up all over the place and we love 'em. Surrey was in need and we responded to the call. This Surrey Jelly is in Chertsey at the lovely Foxhills.
If you're a little tired of working in isolation in your home office of 1 then here's the chance to blow off the cobwebs, get a change of scene and work with like minds in a delightfully different environment.
Please note that although this is an event for business people, jellyquette dictates that everyone needs to feel comfortable to work without being bombarded with sales pitches. So Jelly's are respectfully requested to be pitch free events please folks, please keep any shameless plugs for your business outside of jelly time. :)
A few Jelly FAQ's
What does it cost to attend?
It is FREE to attend, all you need do is bring money to buy yourself tea/coffee from the bar. There are plenty of options for lunch and snacks at the lovely foxhills, from a formal sit down in the restaurant to jacket spuds and the like in the terrace bar.
Do I have to stay all day?
Nope, jelly is designed to be flexible for homeworkers so it can fit around your other commitments. Just turn up plug in and go when you've had enough. We encourage people to stay for a good chunk of the day if possible as then we get a good interactive vibe going but it's got to work for you and be productive too.
Is it for me?
If you've experienced isolation working from home and want to try something new then absolutely it's for you. As long as you have a laptop and plenty of work to keep you busy and you're a business person then you qualify to attend Jelly. The more variety of people the better!
What do people do at Jelly?
Anything you can do quietly and independently, so anything on a laptop. Other Jellyers will appreciate you taking phone calls outside the room if your mobile rings. Its the ideal time and place to catch up on all those little jobs you keep meaning to do but never get round to. You could do stuff like:
• Accounts
• Catch up on some reading/ writing
• Emails
• Online housekeeping
• Blogging
• Updating social media profiles
• Commenting on blogs
• Tweeting
